Healthcare insurers, employers and others are constantly seeking innovative ways to manage the trend of healthcare costs without compromising care. Suboptimal care, rising costs and inappropriate utilization of healthcare services have all led to the need for significant reforms in the current system and new approaches to cost containment. Unfortunately, many of the programs implemented to reduce costs such as disease management, case management, and drug formularies, have had only modest impacts on pharmacy and medical cost trends. With the introduction of genomic-based tests, choosing which therapeutic agent or intervention to prescribe will be based on science rather than on pure economics, as is often the case today.  With the use of genetic tests, specific therapies may no longer be appropriate for use across an unselected population. Specific therapies may be useful only in populations defined by the presence or absence of a biomarker and therefore, the use of market share drivers to reduce costs may no longer be viable in these cases. The new approach to clinical care that incorporates Therapeutic Diagnostics™ will focus on lowering unit drug cost where possible, increasing efficacy of treatments provided to specific individuals, reducing adverse drug events, and getting patients to therapeutic goals more rapidly.
